That’s a lot of excitement for such a small area as ours — it’s hard to believe all of that happened in just one week.
“We have been stepping up our efforts in your area for the last several days and will continue as much as we can,” said Sacramento Police Department’s Daniel Hahn. “Graveyard Officer Tavelli worked directed patrol in the same area in hopes of locating some possible suspects. . . He developed some information and is following up on those leads to hopefully determine the identity of the suspect(s).”
Here’s what we can all do together to help:
- We all really need to double up on our efforts to keep our eyes and ears open especially juveniles out after curfew (10 PM). If you see anything suspicous, including juveniles roaming the neighborhood after 10 PM, call Sacramento Police Department’s non-emergency dispatch line at 916/264-5471. Be prepared to provide the nearest intersection, the direction they were going, and a description. It may not be possible for an officer to come right away, but often they do — and even if they don’t, at least there is a valuable record of the issue.
- Burglaries of vehicles are on the rise in our part of town, and this video shows juveniles casing a vehicle in our neighborhood a few weeks ago. Sacramento Police Department has partnered with N Magazine to produce this sheet of flyer slips that we can place under windshields of cars in our neighborhood if we notice items that may be of value in plain sight. Capt. Hahn is asking for our help: “as you walk your neighborhoods, apartment complexes or shopping center parking lots, if you see a car with property that is visible – please place one of these flyers under the windshield wiper or drivers side door. This will ensure the owner gets a reminder to put their property in an area that isn’t visible – and therefore prevent future car burglaries. We need to get the word out to all of our neighbors to ensure they “harden” their cars/property. Help neighbors know they shouldn’t leave valuables in plain sight inside their cars,” he said.
- Tell your neighbors about Witter Ranch Community Alliance and how we’re all working together and partering with Sacramento Police Department to address these crime trends in our community (among many other good things!). Print flyers for them so they have information about our Web site, our purpose, our meeting schedule, etc.

(187695) 6/21/09 @ 7:04 pm, 400 block of Dragonfly, burglary/Arrest, Gateway West
The victim returned home to see the suspect leaving the house (victim described the suspect as a male black 16yrs, 5′5″, curly hair, stripes on jeans and black backpack). Officers arrived shortly and observed a similar looking suspect in the neighborhood with a backpack. The suspect ran from the officer and jumped several fences. Ultimately (patrol officers, helicopter, and K-9) the suspect was located by the K-9 hiding in a garbage can. He had property from the victim’s residence. he attempted to get rid of the backpack, but officers located that also. While dealing with this, CSO Masing told officers that she took a burglary report in the same area a little earlier. Turns out our suspect had property the this burglary also…this one was located in the 2900 block of Frigate Bird (The suspects broke into the home through the “doggie” door). The 14 yr. old suspect was arrested on both burglaries and possession of stolen property. The suspect is on probation and currently has an ankle monitor. Obviously a good call on behalf of the victim but also a lot of help from the neighborhood as we searched for the suspect.(178172) 6/13/09 @ 10:31 am, Gateway West Area, Car Vandalism, Gateway West
Officers responded to a resident who had their car tires slashed over night. Officers conducted a neighborhood canvass and located a total of 5 cars that had their tires slashed. Stimmler, Chateau Montelena, and Poppy Hill were all hit including a Hummer, Honda Civic and a VW Passat. Over the weekend several cars and homes were also vandalized by someone throwing eggs.Last Night Graveyard Officer Tavelli worked directed patrol in the same area in hopes of locating some possible suspects. he stopped several people but was unable to connect anything to the recent vandalism. He left the area around 1:30 am to handle other things and returned about 3:00 am. When he returned he observed about 10 cars that had been egged while he was gone. He developed some information and is following up on those leads to hopefully determine the identity of the suspect(s) – Hopefully more to follow in upcoming updates.
(181087) 6/16/09 @ 12:24 am, Stemmler Dr/Poppy Hill Wy, Drug arrest, Gateway West
Graveyard Officer Tavelli was working in the above area in response to the recent eggings of cars and tire slashings. He observed 3 subjects walking south on Stemmler from Poppy Hill. He contacted them due to the recent vandalism’s and the fact they looked underage to be out that late. One subject was wearing an Oldsmobile car key around his neck and the officer determined his car was parked on Opus Cr. around the corner. Off’s Bell and Slay responded to assist and search the car. Inside the car was located a bag of marijuana, a scale and packaging material. One subject (17 yrs. old) was arrested on drug charges and the other two 17 yr. olds were released to their father. All of them live in North Natomas and one lives in Gateway West (not the one with the marijuana).
